ChezVous Crepes and Gelato opens in Scottsdale

Special for the (Arizona) Republic, by Carey Sweet - Apr. 15, 2010

What would it take to convince a couple to quit executive-level careers, sell a painstakingly remodeled home, uproot their family and move from Paris to serve fast food in a shopping center in Scottsdale?

Sunshine, apparently.

ChezVous Crepes and Gelato opened this week in the Shops at Gainey Village, offering savory and sweet paper-thin pancakes, salads, sandwiches, desserts, omelets and croissants.

The French-born Horvaths met as children. Richard worked in financing for 25 years and Isabella in publishing. The couple fell in love with Scottsdale while vacationing here last spring.

"When we went home, we couldn't stop thinking about Scottsdale and how nice it would be to live here with the sun shining every morning - something you don't see in Paris," Isabella said.

Anchoring the menu are crepes, stuffed with a variety of savory ingredients like ham, Swiss cheese, mushrooms, tomato coulis and egg or smoked salmon, sour cream, capers and lemon.

Sweet selections include a Caribbean of shredded coconut, dark chocolate and strawberry or banana or homemade plain yogurt with cinnamon. An a la mode scoop of gelato is optional.

In the salad area, the French Riviera tosses rice, tomatoes, tuna, black olive and egg, while a Country tumbles sautéed potatoes, prosciutto, Comte cheese and greens cover classics like the Croque Monsieur or Madame.

At dessert, look for a ChezVous signature Floating Island, made with dollops of meringue bobbing in a sea of crème anglaise and caramel.

Once the liquor license goes through, a variety of French wines will join the lineup. And that piano in the corner? Richard is an accomplished pianist.

Rolf’s Salon Offers Complimentary Services on “Nurse Appreciation Day”

Rolf's hosts charity fundraiser benefitting Valley nurse on Monday, May 10, 2010

Inspired by the commitment of a Valley-nurse and cancer survivor of delivering the message of Intelligent Beauty, Rolf’s Salon will turn their four locations into a private sanctuary for nurses. On Monday, May 10th from 10 am until 7 pm, Rolf’s will offer complimentary haircut and blow-dry as well as deeply discounted color services to nurses. All proceeds from this one-day event go to support Helene Neville’s cross country run to carry the message of health, beauty and wellness for all nurses.

A minimum donation of $30, each nurse will receive a t-shirt, book and complimentary haircut and blow-dry service. Participants can add color for an additional $30 donation. Pricing for these services would normally start at $45.00 for haircut and $60.00-95.00 for color. As space is limited, participants and guests are encouraged to reserve their appointments early for this special charity event.

Neville will be on hand to sign copies of her book, Nurses in Shape, which was written for specifically for nurses at the SHOPS gainey village location. 100% off the proceeds raised during this event will go to help fund Neville’s transcontinental journey.

Helene Neville, RN

The self-proclaimed “Richard Simmons of nurses,” Neville has been a fitness coach and trainer for the past 27 years. However, it is her health battles that have empowered her to promote health and fitness. After surviving Hodgkin’s disease and three brain surgeries, Neville is ready to set foot on a 2,520-mile run as she delivers the essential message of active living to nurses across the country. Although the prognosis of her health remains questionable, Neville is determined to leave behind a legacy for grandchildren that she may not be able to meet.

Neville will kick off her journey with a celebration April 27, 2010 at Rolf’s Salon’s Scottsdale location (at the SHOPS gainey village). This will be the first of several stops Neville will be making along the way to promote both the run and her health and fitness book, Nurses in Shape, as she runs from Ocean Beach, Calif., to Jacksonville Beach, Fla., in 100 days. Her journey, entitled One on the Run, begins May 1, 2010, and will be completed by the time she turns 50 years old on August 17, 2010.

“My run is not to realize my dreams, but to help others realize theirs,” says Neville, “The focus of my book is to educate nurses on how to reach higher levels of mental, emotional and physical wellness so that they may better serve their patients.”

A few hundred miles shorter, the southern route offers many challenges including rugged terrain and extreme temperatures. Only two other runners, both male, have been able to complete this route. Helene will be the first female to complete the extreme southern Gulf Coast route. She will also be the first runner to complete the southern route in the humid summer months.

Any additional money raised from this run will be donated to the Saint Francis deSales Elementary School, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on behalf of the Maryellen Rouse Neifert Memorial Fund. The memorial was created in memory of my mother, who passed away from cancer. This school, whose students come from disadvantaged backgrounds all around the country and world, has produced several Gates scholars.

To reserve an appointment or for additional information on Nurses Day, please call 480-755-7653.

To make a contribution to her mission or learn more about Neville’s run across the U.S.A., visit www.oneontherun.com. For information on Neville’s book, Nurses In Shape, please visit www.nursesinshape.com.
